EARLY RECORDINGS
by Alvaro Is Rojas

Spanish pianist Alvaro Is Rojas recorded this collection of expressive jazz songs in Prague, Czech Republic and Stockholm, Sweden in the early part of the 1990s. About half of the selections are his original compositions, a kind of new romantic approach which echos sounds from the 1960s. The other half belongs to his favorites in the American songbook; the opening track is a swinging rendition of late bassist Red Mitchell's Talking. Rojas makes an important mark on what jazz solo piano improvisation can be, and incorporates 20th century classical genres and a more popular pianistic approach into what can only be defined as his truly original style.
